Group Stage Summary
The Vancouver Whitecaps were one of two teams – Arabe Unido being the other — to post an unblemished record in the 2016/17 SCCL group stage, including two one-goal triumphs. The campaign opened with a pair of shutout victories over host Central FC (1-0) and visiting Sporting Kansas City (3-0). Vancouver then conceded only one goal in two straight games, both wins: away v Sporting Kansas City (2-1) and home v Central FC (4-1).
Forward Cristian Techera was the group-stage standout for Vancouver. The 24-year-old is the competition’s joint-top scorer with five goals, also chipping in with a pair of assists (tied with Hurtado for the team lead). He found the back of the net in three of four outings and his movement — with or without the ball – was a thorn in the side of defenses.
