Tigres is making its third Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League appearance — and second consecutive — after reaching the final a year ago, falling to Lig MX rival Club America (agg: 1-4). In its other appearance, UANL advanced to the quarterfinals, before being eliminated by Seattle Sounders FC (agg: 2-3). Tigres also reached the final of the 2015 Copa Libertadores, losing to Argentine powerhouse River Plate (agg: 0-3). The four-time Mexican champion is coached by legendary Ricardo Ferretti, who — as interim manager — helped guide Mexico to a 3-2 win over the United States in the 2015 CONCACAF Cup. He has deep roster to call upon, including Mexico internationals Javier Aquino, Jurgen Damm, Jesus Dueñas and Jorge Torres Nilo, as well as France international Andre-Pierre Gignac and Chile star Eduardo Vargas.
Group Stage Summary
Tigres was one of only two teams – Pumas being the other — to lose a 2016/17 SCCL group-stage game on the road and still earn a berth in the quarterfinals. Regardless of that 1-0 setback at Plaza Amador in Week 5, UANL won its other three matches, scoring three goals in each. For the second consecutive SCCL, Tigres posted only one clean sheet during the group stage, but has not allowed more than a single goal during that eight-game stretch.
Although defender Jose Arturo Rivas didn’t have a large role to play in Tigres’ run to the 2016 Liga MX Apertura title, he has been key to success in the current SCCL. The 32-year-old played every minute of the group stage for a side that conceded only three goals in four games, providing assured performances even when there were changes to the regular starting line-up.
