Club Deportivo Plaza Amador
A 1-0 win against Chorrillo FC in the 2016 Panamanian Clausura final earned Plaza Amador its first-ever Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League berth. Ernesto Sinclair’s 24th minute goal gave the Lions their first domestic crown since 2005. Thanks to an extraordinary defense, Plaza Amador conceded a league-low nine goals in 18 games (no other allowed less than 16) to finish second in the regular-season table (29 points), three points behind Atletico Nacional. In the Clausura semifinals, it needed an extra-time goal by Ricaurte Barsallo to prevail over defending champion Arabe Unido, 3-2 on aggregate. Plaza Amador – a six-time domestic champion — is led by defenders Luis Mendoza and Sergio Ortega, as well as goalkeeper Eric Hughes.
