Honduras Progreso captured its first-ever Honduran league title, prevailing over Motagua, 4-1 on penalties, after their 2015 Apertura final ended 4-4 on aggregate. The outcome marked the first time in 29 tournaments that a team other than Olimpia (14), Marathon (6), Motagua (4) or Real España (4) lifted the domestic trophy. Platense was the last side to accomplish the feat, overcoming Olimpia for the 2001 Clausura crown (agg: 2-1). As a result, Honduras Progreso earned a berth in the 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League and became the sixth different Honduran side to gain admission to the competition. Goalkeeper Woodrow West is a Belize international, while defender Dilmer Gutierrez and forward Angel Tejeda have been capped by Honduras. Tejeda netted a team-best 13 goals during the 2015/16 Honduran domestic campaign. Another forward Fredixon Elvir has four career Champions League goals (one with Victoria, three with Olimpia).
