JEONJU, Korea Republic -- The United States’ run in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup came to an end with 2-1 extra-time loss to Venezuela in the quarterfinals on Sunday at Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Following the completion of 90 minutes of scoreless football, the Venezuelans took a 2-0 lead, before Jeremy Ebobisse netted for the CONCACAF champion.

Adalberto Peñaranda struck first in the 96th minute, when he slotted home from eight-yards out with his right foot off a left-sided cross by Samuel Sosa.

Venezuela doubled its advantage in the 116th minute with Ronaldo Lucena’s left-sided, in-swinging corner kick being nodded downward and past goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann by Nahuel Ferraresi from the edge of the six-yard box.

Ebobisse halved the deficit a minute with a looping header into the right side of the net after Brooks Lennon delivered a right-sided free kick to the six-yard box’s upper-left corner.

The U.S. did well to limit the potential damage of Venezuela attempting 26 shots as Klinsmann registered eight saves, including a fingertip one on Ferraresi in just the first minute.

Venezuela also saw Sergio Cordova’s goal called back for offside midway through the first half after a Video Assistant Referee review.
