    Guadalajara’s Pineda: “We are improving”

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – After capturing the 2017 Liga MX Clausura title, the 2017 Apertura did not go as planned for Orbelin Pineda Guadalajara.

The 12-time Mexican champion finished 13th in the regular-season table and missed out on postseason berth.

The early signs in the 2018 Clausura, however, have been positive. Chivas earned a solid 1-1 draw at Toluca on Sunday in week one play and will next look for three points when Cruz Azul visits Saturday.

“I think things were done well (against Toluca),” said Pineda, who was subbed out after 65 minutes. “Of course, there are several things to improve, but having played such a match against an opponent like Toluca -- at their home -- is a positive.

“Little by little we are improving on what we lacked last season. We have a winning mentality and we know what we have to do to achieve it.”

One of the issues that plagued head coach Matias Almeyda’s side during the 2017 Apertura was an inability to secure positive results at home, posting a 1W-4D-4L record. Pineda knows that mark must be improved upon for Guadalajara to have success domestically and in the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.

“We have to have the ball and attack with great intensity,” he finished. “Matias asks this of us a lot; that we leave our hearts on the field and that we play the same way we played two seasons ago. We have to work in order to improve and have our minds set on winning at home this weekend.”
