Canada women fall to Germany in Olympic semis, Brazil next for bronze

Canada's Janine Beckie (left) and Melanie Behringer of Germany chase for the ball during their Women's Olympic Football Tournament semifinal on August 16, 2016, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

BELO HORIZONTE. Brazil -- Canada will vie for the bronze medal in a second straight Women’s Olympic Football Tournament after dropping a 2-0 semifinal decision to Germany on Tuesday at the Estadio Mineirao.

The CONCACAF power will meet host Brazil, which fell 4-3 to Sweden on penalty kicks following scoreless draw, on Friday in Sao Paulo.

A foul by Canada defender Kadeisha Buchanan against Alexandra Popp in the box placed Melanie Behringer at the penalty spot in the 21st minute and she converted to give Germany a 1-0 lead.

Only nine minutes earlier, Canada had a chance to go ahead, but an unmarked Janine Beckie headed inches wide of the right post.

Germany netted an insurance goal in 59th minute, when Sara Daebritz – positioned in the left side of the box -- did well to cut inside and fire home inside the near post.

Second-half substitute Diana Matheson nearly pulled one back for Canada, only for her 80th minute effort off a delicate through ball from Jessie Fleming to be denied by goalkeeper Almuth Schult.

"I thought we worked hard and we gave it our all," said Canada head coach John Herdman. "We have to go fight the Brazilians for a bronze medal. We have to bring it home - that's what we promised, that's our job now."

Canada defeated France, 1-0, in the bronze-medal game at London 2012.

NOTES: Germany avenged a 2-1 loss to Canada in Group F play on August 9.
